Michael LoRusso, the son of a Long Island personal injury attorney, grew up rooting for the New York Giants football team, played baseball and basketball at a local Catholic high school and attending church every week. He was sent to Florida for help with his addiction problems.

He had been discharged from a Delray Beach sober home and then hospitalized for three days, a family friend told police.

On Nov. 13, the friend, Lewis Kasman, helped Michael check in to a West Boca hotel. When he checked on Michael the next day, Kasman found Michael dead in his room, overdosed on heroin and fentanyl.

"He was a was a wonderful boy,'' said Kasman, who grew up on Long Island with Michael's dad.About two weeks later, Palm Beach County's Chief Deputy Sheriff Michael Gauger received a complaint that "the alleged sober house" where Michael had been staying is "nothing more (than) a drug den providing drugs to these poor souls. It needs to be closed." Investigators tracked phone numbers provided in the email and planned to stake out the sober home.

Michael was 22.

SMITHTOWN FOOD PANTRY:

SEVEN CHURCHES WORKING TOGETHER!

Established in March of 1984, the members of seven church congregations within Smithtown saw a need to provide food to residents who could not afford to feed their families. This is an ecumenical project that depends on the parishioners of all seven churches to work together as one in order to provide food and to staff the pantry on a rotating basis. Our motto is "to aid residents in an Emergency Food Crisis."

We are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

Every year we are also able to provide a complete Thanksgiving Dinner for our clients. Due to the outstanding support from our Smithtown Community last year 122 families received everything from napkins, homemade breads, turkey, fresh vegetables and fruit and delicious pies.

The churches are:

  • Byzantine Church of the Resurrection
  • First Presbyterian Church of Smithtown
  • Smithtown United Methodist Church
  • St. Andrews Lutheran Church
  • St. James Episcopal Church
  • St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church
  • St. James Lutheran Church

We provided over 80,000 meals last year to those in need.

NORTH FORK CRUISERS CAR ASSOCIATION: IT'S ABOUT PEOPLE!

WHO WE ARE:

We are Car hobbyists first! Some have older and others, newer cars and trucks of varied vintage years. Not all are old. Some are unique and different by the owner’s craftsmanship. Some are modified muscle cars. What we all have in common: “America’s Number 1 Hobby” the Motor Vehicle! Club Members span across the entire length of the LI North Shore and wider throughout the North Fork of Long Island, NY.

alt

Since the day of the first road race in the world, the famous “Vanderbilt Race” across Long Island, auto restoration, modification, racing and road clubs have become an All American obsession. Other than one remaining race track in Riverhead with very limited ability to participate in what was once a major part of Long Island family entertainment and auto park sports. The huge population of car hobbyists has been limited to local cruise nights and car shows to display them. The hobby thrives on Long Island like no other part of the country with the widest selection of car clubs, meets, gatherings, shows and fundraisers.

alt

OTHER ACTIVITIES:

Our weekly car meets are a bit varied from most: We are "couples friendly" and welcome kids! Most still sit in circles, chatting, dining indoors or out. Live music is common. It's all fellowship! There’s other summer season “fun” such as road cruise outings that are planned to various points around Long Island all summer long. Convoys of cars on the road ending someplace to picnic, party and more than often, be entertained with live music and dancing!
